I have been in a creative funk the last month. Pretty overwelmed with so many ideas floating around my head, but nothing really catchy enough to play with. I knew I had to do something to get out of the funk, and I remembered what my professor Sam Fields said.. Just work. Just do it. Start painting or whatever and it will come to you, and the ideas will come. So that is what I did. I started with what I know, the pour but expanded on it and redefined it, but 'animating' it with the outline. My influences include Dr. Seuss, Disney's Alice in Wonderland and Second life, as well as Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. I have also been dabbling with the idea of escape. Especially in our society today, I believe we are all trying to escape the dark times we are in right now. Whether its into Virtual Reality, Movies etc... I escape into my painting, and ok yes Second Life...hahaha But that is ok. I think my love of maps really comes out in a couple of these works. Especially the idea of islands and contour plains. Another place to escape too?
I love these works though. I think I have found a niche that I am happy to expand on. I am going to continue playing around. The next couple pieces I am working on have the background a solid color. So we will see how those come out.
These pieces here are in order of when they were done. The top piece was first, and so forth. I'd love to know what you think. Thank you all so much for your support!!!

Updated Artist Statement and Biography:

As an artist, I work in two realities, the physical and the virtual. On one level, I am a process abstractionist, using acrylic paint to explore the various dimensions of paint application, choice of colors and countless methods for textures and patterns. On another level, I am an artist working in Second Life, the Web 2.0 virtual reality world. In that realm, I concentrate on the process of exhibiting my work globally. I am a part of a group of contemporary artists who are exploring new uses for presenting their work through social networking tools and Web 2.0 applications.

The physicality of my work is influenced by “real life” contemporary artists such as Pia Fries, Fumiko Amano, Aaron Petersen, Pat Steir and Gerhard Richter. Like many of these artists, I use unconventional methods to create and communicate my ideas. I normally paint on whatever is available, whether canvas, wood or metal. Rather than using a paintbrush, I use a wooden spoon, comb, hairbrush or a blow dryer to play with the paint. Sometimes I spread the paint directly from the tube, or thin the paint and pour it onto the canvas using the blow dryer or gravity to let the paint flow. I am often on the floor with the canvas getting ‘into’ the paint as I pour, drip, spread and then blow the paint around. I literally put myself into my works. By letting the paint flow freely, my art captures the energy found in action painting, with more emphasis placed on the physical reactions of the materials.

I have moved from the conceptual theories of the last period in Art history, in order to get back to the formal aspects of art. My work is about the three dimensionality of paint. Through the use of color, texture, pattern and design I rely heavily on contrasts; positive vs. negative, control vs. release, organic vs. structured, curvy vs. straight, soft vs. hard, smooth vs. rough, order vs. chaos, planned vs. spontaneous, change vs. constancy, opaque vs. transparent, thick vs. thin, push vs. pull, addition vs. subtraction, control vs. release. The finished painting is realized when these elements come together in harmony.

My physical artworks are subsequently digitized and uploaded into Second Life. In this environment, the emotional impact is enhanced through the deliberate manipulation of scale in my artwork. Each becomes more grandiose and powerful after having been enlarged to sizes greater than life. I use the Second Life venue as a global platform, where contemporary social networking capabilities allow connections with people on a creative as well as psychological level.

I believe in intensity and passion and I will continue to explore new avenues, new alternatives in process, paint and presentation.

Biography:
Kristine Schomaker lives in Southern California, as a Masters Candidate in Art at California State University Northridge. In 1998, she began part-time painting and drawing classes at the local Junior College while she continued her education in Art History. Even though her studies were more erudite in nature, she continued to paint, experimenting with different abstract styles and techniques. While studying art history, she realized her true passion was in creating art, not writing about it. She challenged herself to find her contemporary voice by continuing with her studies in Studio Art. Kristine is just now emerging onto the contemporary art scene, using new media applications and social networking tools to give her art exposure on a global level.

My Artist Statement...

My work is a manifestation of my belief in freedom, diversity and hope. I believe in a world culture where everyone is accepted and considered equal. Unfortunately though, I do know that I’m in a world where people are judged and stereotyped based on labels and appearance. I believe that my art works to cut through these labels by connecting people and communicating on an emotional level.

I am the type of person who is always looking… looking for shapes, colors, expression in everything around me. When my work is seen, I want the optimism, energy, passion to resonate. I want people to get a sense of freedom, of diversity and to see the color in life. I want them to feel a charge, a moment of exhilaration that their life is better because of the color I bring to it. I want them to be challenged to consider their own lives. I want them to think about the endless possibilities of what can be accomplished both individually and collectively.

My primary concern is with color. Specifically, how pigments interact and create visual tension with each other. I like to manipulate paint, mix it and push it in different directions. I work with different colors to see how they interact with each other. I let them play off each other.

Artist Wassily Kandinsky said, "Colour is the key. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano with its many chords. The artist is the hand that, by touching this or that key, sets the soul vibrating automatically." I believe that music and art help shape our soul. I believe that we need to be moved to act, to change, to love, to pursue, to search… and art can do this.

Like many postmodern artists, I use unconventional methods to create and communicate my ideas. I normally paint on whatever is available, whether canvas, wood or metal. I tend to use the same colors over again. I sometimes paint on older canvas, often using previous works, to use the texture underneath. I like the bumps and different surfaces and how the paint flows over them in different ways. Whether with a palette knife, or pouring it on and blow-drying it, the textures can be obstacles that the paint has to work around. My colors come from my optimistic view that the world can be a better place. My patterns and textures come from the visual stimuli around us.

I am currently involved with how new media helps artists explore and experience new ways of connecting with the world. My physical artworks are subsequently digitized and uploaded into Second Life, the Web 2.0 virtual reality world. In this environment, the emotional impact is enhanced through my deliberate manipulation of scale in each artwork; they become grandiose and powerful expressions after having been enlarged to sizes greater than life. I have always been in awe of those who are selfless, strong, and authentic, because these are the dimensions of character needed, I believe, to shape our best future. My job as an artist is to express these qualities – things like passion, love, hope, patience, integrity and confidence – in a way that viewers will not just recognize but take in and allow to resonate with their own best selves.

My work is an optimistic reflection of the world, a walk down Main Street, where the viewer, hopefully, is engaged not just by form and color but by energy, fantasy, passion, freedom, hope and, perhaps most of all, friendship.

My art is most inspired by everyday experiences: a sunrise, a story in the news, a strikingly-wrapped gift. A single image can trigger an idea that I expand and develop, whether from a magazine, art history or pop culture. I think this happens because I love what life presents to us. I want people to see and feel, as I do, the aura that emanates from even the simplest things that constitute our experience of the world. I believe that life is too short. There are endless possibilities to what we can do. Expressing my self through art is my small contribution to this wonderful world we live in.

While I am creating, I often have the TV on in the background. Sometimes there are movies playing, sitcoms or the news. I believe the mass media shapes the culture of our time, whether positively or negatively it is not going away. My eclectic views of the world are brought to fruition in my art. Our postmodern era enlivens the eclectic pastiche we live in. I believe in equality around the world and use elements to this effect in my art. You can see the Eiffel tower, art from India and even The Virgin of Guadalupe in one collage. The mixing of the different patterns, designs and color also help enhance my ideas of our multicultural world.

MEDIA

I work in what I call ‘the spontaneous abstract’, principally with two forms: acrylic paint and mixed media collage.

In paint, although I do start with a formal structure in mind, my chief concern is with color: how one pigment interacts with and creates visual tension with another – the hammer on the string that sets the soul vibrating. I either spread the paint directly from the tube, or I thin the paint and pour it onto the canvas.

In collage, I use many different kinds of papers that I find visually interesting. This can be found images, patterns and designs as well as advertisements, popular culture and art history. I don’t start out with a finished piece in mind but start with a central piece and then add layer upon layer in a planned spontaneity.

My physical artworks are subsequently digitized and uploaded into Second Life, the online virtual reality world under the pseudonym Gracie Kendal. www.secondlife.com In this environment, the emotions are enhanced through my deliberate manipulation of scale in each artwork; they become grandiose and powerful expressions after having been enlarged to sizes greater than life. This venue offers an amazing multicultural platform, in which my art is able to reach people on a creative as well as very emotional level.

I currently live in beautiful Southern California.
I have been creating art since childhood, but the last 10 years I have actually considered myself an artist.
I didn’t want to be a starving artist so I decided to go to school and study art history.
I am currently finishing my Masters Degree and contemplating going on for my PhD in Film and Television.
This gives me a great opportunity of being surrounded by art everyday of my life, what more could one ask for.
